A CLEAR CONSCIENCE
Key Scriptures
Hebrews 10:22 “… having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience…”
Hebrews 9:14 “… purge your conscience from dead works to serve the Living God.”
(Acts 24:16; Romans 2:15; 1 Timothy 1:5 & 19)
A GOOD CONSCIENCE
1 Peter 3:15- 16 – “…but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, 16 having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.
WHAT IS A CONSCIENCE AND HOW IT WORKS?
Our conscience is an inner prompting to do what we think to be right and to avoid what we think to be wrong. It is an inner voice that is bearing witness to you, accusing you, if you are wrong or defending you, if you are right (Rom. 2:15)
REPROGRAM OUR CONSCIENCE
Our conscience is like a computer. It will only come up with the right answers if we feed in the right information. God wants to reprogram our conscience so that it will act as a guide or compass that will point God’s way each time we make a decision. This will limit our disobedience and help us to do what God wants.
IS A CLEAR CONSCIENCE IMPORTANT?
Our salvation is to set us free from condemnation. (Romans 8:1), but if your conscience is not clear then you will always be under condemnation and guilt. This will affect:
- Your relationship with God
- Your faith
- Your prayer life
- Your desire for God’s Word
- Your witness
THE ANSWER FOR A GUILTY CONSCIENCE
Hebrews
9:14
14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit
offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve
the living God?
POINT IT TO THE CROSS
The next time your conscience condemns you because of sin, don’t try to silence it with your good works. Look to the cross and say, “Father, thank You for Jesus and the cross. Jesus was totally condemned on my behalf for this sin, so there is now absolutely no guilt and condemnation left for me.” Then, your conscience will look at the cross and say, “He is my peace.” Jesus’ finished work at the cross truly sets you free!
HOW TO KEEP A CLEAR CONSCIENCE?
Our conscience can be clear and free from guilt. The blood of Christ is sufficient to cleanse all our sin and appease our conscience and make it as new. There are four steps to do that:
1. Immediate confession of sin (1 John 1:9)
2. Trust in the promise of cleansing (Heb. 9:14)
3. Obey your conscience (James 1:22)
4. Continue to walk in the Light (1 John 1:7)
AN ANSWERED PRAYER
1 John 3:20 KJV
For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
21 Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God, 22 and we will receive from Him whatever we ask, because we keep His commandments and do what is pleasing in His sight.
A HARDEN CONSCIENCE
If a person willfully goes on ignoring his conscience, it will become hardened and stop speaking. This is what Paul meant by a “seared conscience (1 Timothy 4:2)
We will do the wrong thing and think it is right. It is like being unable to feel pain.
Your conscience is one of the most effective tools you have been given by God to help you live in right relationship with Him.
