Digging Wells For Our Present Generation To Drink
Our Text is taken from Genesis 26:19 which reads - "And Isaac's servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water."
And in Genesis 26:21-22 the bible says, "And they digged another well, and strove for that also: and he called the name of it Sitnah. {22} And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the LORD hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land."
In Genesis 26:25 "And he built an altar there, and called upon the name of the LORD, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac's servants digged a well."
Issac dug the wells that his father had claimed, but he dug new wells and made his own claims. This is our generation to dig wells for ourselves and others. And our spiritual wells come from none other than Jesus Himself. Thank God for the spiritual territory claimed by our forefathers, but we have got to claim spiritual territory as our own from the enemies.
We see when the new wells were dug there will be great opposition. The devil never likes for wells to be dug in his territory. If you try to dig a well you can expect opposition. Isaac dug wells but he was fought each step of the way.
1. The first well was named Esek which means contention.
(Genesis 26:20) "And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaac's herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him."
2. The second well was named Sitnah which means hatred.
(Genesis 26:21) "And they digged another well, and strove for that also: and he called the name of it Sitnah."
In John 4:1 - "When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John. Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples, He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee. And he must needs go through Samaria. {5} Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. {6} Now Jacob's well was there."
Today, Jesus declares - “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” – John 4:14
Jesus was telling the Samaritan woman to drink only from Him. But the woman was looking to Jacob's well. I believe Jacob's well represents our own effort or works instead of God's grace effortlessly. This well also representing the Law which cannot save and satisfies us.
Many of us tried hard to drink from the right water Jesus provides, yet we can be thirsty. Maybe we are trying to drink from the wrong well. We need to drink from the water that is freely given by Jesus not from our strength to draw for ourselves.
We need to stop drinking from the old wells of our past traditions and worldly pursuits. And wells of complacency, doubts, contentions and hatred. There are also wells of dryness and death. Instead of wells of lack and guilt and condemnation we need to dig into the wells of abundance and His love, life and grace. We also need to dig new wells deep into the water and river of Jesus gracious grace. Start digging into the wells of God's Revelation and Wisdom. There are wells of Joy and Freedom in Christ. You can even sing as you dig into the water of God. This is the well of unspeakable joy as Christ is the well of Living water spring up within us. Today, the enemy is trying to cover up the wells of our Salvation that Jesus gave us. Stir up the gift of God which is in you. (2 Timothy 1:6)
The Israelities sang this song “Spring up, O well; sing ye unto it” Numbers 21:17. Let God’s well flows until His Gracious Living Water spring up within us. We must allow Jesus well to flow continually and eternally from within us through the power of the Holy Spirit. The scripture says, “He that believeth on me (JESUS) as the Scripture said – out of his BELLY shall flow rivers of Living water. But this spake the of the Spirit which they that believe on Him should received. – John 7:38, 39
May God's well of Living water and grace spring up within you now!
